Matthew Lopez, the director of\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue,\u00a0says the film\u2019s sex scenes are \u201cessential\u201d to understanding the relationship between Alex and Prince Henry.<\/p>\n

Based on Casey McQuiston\u2019s bestseller of the same name, the Prime Video rom-com follows the star-crossed romance between Alex (Taylor Zahkar Perez), the son of America\u2019s first-ever female president (Uma Thurman), and Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), a British prince.<\/p>\n

The novel is famous for the number of intimate scenes between the duo, which is why\u00a0fans widely celebrated\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue\u2018s R-rating\u00a0earlier this year.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with GAY TIMES, Lopez says the team \u201ctook great care\u201d in bringing the sex scenes to life: \u201cWhat\u2019s in the movie is absolutely essential to understanding who these two people are to one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was very clear with the producers from the beginning that we\u2019re not going to shy away from depicting how two men have sex with each other. But, we\u2019re also going to make sure that we never lose sight of the fact that it\u2019s Alex and Henry having a moment of deep, emotional connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lopez reveals there are only \u201c20 seconds\u201d in the entire film in which neither one of the characters appear. \u201cEverything boils down to Alex and Henry,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything that isn\u2019t about understanding them as individuals or as a couple simply doesn\u2019t belong. Does it help me understand the characters and their relationship? If it does, we film it. If we film it and it doesn\u2019t, it doesn\u2019t go in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red, White & Royal Blue\u00a0marks the directorial debut for Lopez.<\/p>\n

He is best known for his work on the stage, receiving universal critical acclaim for writing the LGBTQ+ classic\u00a0The Inheritance,\u00a0<\/em>which made him the first Latine writer to win the Tony Award for Best Play.<\/p>\n

Lopez has committed the last \u201ctwo-and-a-half years\u201d of his life to adapting\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue\u00a0<\/em>and is \u201cincredibly proud\u201d of the final product, particularly the casting of Zahkar Perez and Galitzine as the leads.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spent\u00a0months\u00a0<\/em>seeing people for this,\u201d he shares.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore we started the casting process I was like, \u2018If we don\u2019t find these two, then we can\u2019t make this movie. It\u2019s not worth making this movie with people who are\u00a0almost\u00a0<\/em>right.\u2019 That was the high bar we set for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zahkar Perez and Galitzine always \u201cstayed very high\u201d on Lopez\u2019s list, although the \u201cbig test\u201d came down to how much chemistry the two actors had with one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick was Henry and Taylor was Alex, but were they going to be great together as Henry and Alex? We put them on a Zoom together and to my great relief, the chemistry was there. We knew we had a movie five minutes in because their chemistry was undeniable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re sensitive and smart enough to know they needed each other.\u00a0They were very competitive with each other, in a fun way. They goofed off and would try and screw each other up. But, when it counted, they showed up for one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time the camera was on the other one, they never phoned it in, they knew they had to deliver.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official synopsis for\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue<\/em>\u00a0reads: \u201cSeparated by an ocean, [Alex and Henry\u2019s] long-running feud hasn\u2019t really been an issue, until a disastrous\u2014and very public\u2014altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S.\/British relations at the worst possible time.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged \u201ctruce.\u201d But as Alex and Henry\u2019s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Red, White & Royal Blue<\/em>\u2019s cast also includes Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, Stephen Fry, Ellie Bamber, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth and Juan Castano.<\/p>\n
