Red, White & Royal Blue\u2019s Taylor Zakhar Perez defends Nicholas Galitzine from \u201crude\u201d sexuality questions<\/h1>\n

Taylor Zakhar Perez\u00a0has come to the defence of his\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue\u00a0co-star\u00a0Nicholas Galitzine\u00a0from \u2018rude and unprofessional\u2019 questions about his sexuality.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Galitzine expressed \u201cguilt\u201d over taking on queer roles \u201cas a straight man\u201d.<\/p>\n

As well as his beloved performance in the Prime Video rom-com,\u00a0the British actor has played queer in\u00a0Legends\u00a0(2015),\u00a0Handsome Devil\u00a0(2016),\u00a0The Craft: Legacy\u00a0(2020)\u00a0and\u00a0Mary & George\u00a0(2024).<\/p>\n

\u201cI identify as a straight man, but I have been a part of some incredible queer stories,\u201d he told\u00a0British GQ.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt a sense of uncertainty sometimes about whether I\u2019m taking up someone\u2019s space, and perhaps guilt. At the same time, I see those characters as not solely their sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Galitzine has received acclaim and adoration for these roles, he has also been criticised by those who believe that cis-het actors should make room for LGBTQIA+ actors to play characters of a similar experience.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with\u00a0Men\u2019s Health,\u00a0Perez reflected on the ongoing debate by referencing a quote from Cate Blanchett, who has continuously defended cis-het actors playing LGBTQIA+ roles.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018We must fight to the death to suspend disbelief,’\u201d said Perez.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd that just always stuck with me, because if you\u2019re watching a film and there\u2019s nothing outside the room that matters, the actors are doing their jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued to defend Galitzine: \u201cNicholas was just asked the other day about his sexuality, and I just find it so rude. It\u2019s unprofessional and no one\u2019s business. That\u2019s someone\u2019s personal life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so I\u2019m grateful to be part of a project where, yes, it is a love story, but again, it\u2019s not the sole focus. These people have robust, full lives. They\u2019re educated. Alex is in law school.<\/p>\n

\u201cHenry is crazy smart and he\u2019s a prince, and his sense of duty is unparalleled. The less people focus on sexuality and see what these people are capable of, that\u2019s when we\u2019ve created real change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on\u00a0Casey McQuiston\u2019s championed novel of the same name,\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue\u00a0follows the blossoming romance between a British prince (Galitzine) and the son (Zakhar-Perez) of America\u2019s first-ever female president (Uma Thurman).<\/p>\n

For its faithfulness to the source material and the aforementioned chemistry between the two leads,\u00a0Red, White & Royal Blue\u00a0received universal praise from longtime fans and newcomers.<\/p>\n

After months of edging fans,\u00a0a sequel was confirmed on 9 May at a special screening for the OG film in Culver City, Calif, which was\u00a0attended by Galitzine, Perez, Thurman, Sarah Shahi, Clifton Collins Jr. and Rachel Hilson.<\/p>\n

Galitzine\u00a0and\u00a0Perez will return to their iconic roles as Prince Henry and Alex Claremont-Diaz, with Matthew Lopez once again taking the reigns as director. He will co-write the script with McQuiston.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
